Science - Floating and Sinking

During our topic on castles some of our Reception friends thought that if a knight fell into the moat he would float!

We decided to carry out a science investigation to find out if that was true.

We all chose an item to place into the water tray and made our predictions.

After we made our predictions we placed our items in the water tray.

Lewie-James was very surprised when his metal ring sank!

'Oh I was wrong, I learnt something new today' he told everyone.

Some of our predictions were right and some were wrong, but that is why we carry out investigations.

It was great fun and we learnt lots of new things.

We explored all the items we had placed in the water tray and talked about why some things sank and why some things floated.

We came to the conclusion that it was because metal was heavier than wood and plastic.

Some friends thought that 'big' things sank and 'small' things float. That is another investigation though!
